Browse through most seed shops today and the regular section is the shelf at the back: shorter every year, priced cheaper than the feminized packs next to it, and picked up by a shrinking group of people who know exactly what they are after. It is tempting to read that as the end of a technology. It is closer to the truth to read it as a library losing shelves while the bookshop next door grows. Every female-only line began as a regular one, every new cross requires a male somewhere in its history, and the diversity of cannabis genetics that exists at all exists because someone held onto regular seed. Specialists such as https://breederregularseeds.com stock lines that trace to the 1980s, offered in packs of 10 seeds because a pack is intended to be a population, not a one plant. This article makes the case for that half-male pack: what the male contributes, what a buyer loses by never seeing one, and how to get value with a pack rather than a copy.
The Other Half of the Genome
The easy description of a male cannabis plant is “the one that makes pollen”, and for a flower grower that is all it. For a breeder it is half the genome of every seed that follows, and half is chosen with the same care as the female.
A male contributes structure, hybrid vigour, flowering speed, resistance to mould and pests, resin density and the aromatic chemistry exactly as the female does; it just shows several of those traits less because it never grows a smokable flower. Breeders who work with regular seed invest as much time choosing males as females, which is the work that a feminized cross borrows and cannot repeat. Feminizing a female yields pollen; it cannot provide a second set of selected genes.
What Happens When Lines Are Only Selfed
Much of the feminized market is built from S1 seeds: a one famous clone, treated and pollinated with itself. Every generation of that selfing halves the remaining genetic variation, and after two generations what remains is essentially one plant repeated across slightly different forms.
This is acceptable for a consumer who wants that one plant. It is a loss for everyone downstream. Recessive weaknesses surface: hermaphrodite tendencies, brittle stems, susceptibility to one particular mould. Qualities that were present in the original line but not in the chosen clone disappear from the gene pool entirely. A decade of this leaves a market full with versions of the same few plants, and a breeder trying to create something new discovers there is nothing remaining to cross. Regular seed from an outcrossed line is the store that replenishes the pool, and it can only persist as long as somebody keep growing it.
Reading a Male Plant
Articles on choosing females are easy to find; advice on picking males is scarce, because most people never keep one long enough to look. For anyone making seed, the following are the signs breeders watch for.
- Stability. Any male that also shows female pistils under normal stress is discarded without exception; the trait is the last thing anyone wants breeding forward.
- Structure. Tight internodes, a thick central stem and a frame that matches the desired female habit are passed on; a stretched, weak-stemmed male hands that on too.
- Restraint. Plants that dump enormous amounts of pollen early are often also the less selected genetically; breeders prefer moderate producers.
- Timing. A male that declares sex first and matures at the same pace as the females is more useful than a very early one that sheds pollen before the female is receptive.
- Resin on the stem. Scratch a stem or a flower sac and smell it. A male with resin on its sepals and a strong aroma suggests it carries the resin genes that are worth passing on.
What 10 Seeds Actually Give You
A mistake new regular-seed buyers fall into is seeing a pack as 10 attempts at the same plant. It is the opposite. A pack from a real outcrossed line is a slice of a population, and the point of running it is to observe the range and select from it.
Roughly half the plants will be male, so a pack of 10 seeds gives around five females to evaluate and five males to either discard or judge for breeding. Among the females, expect real differences: stature, finishing time, aroma, density, resistance. This variation is not a failure in the seed; it is what the seed is for. The grower who takes cuttings from the strongest female and the best male has something a feminized pack cannot supply: a line of chosen parents that are theirs.
Three Ways to Cross
Owning selected parents is only worth something if making the next generation, and there the options multiply. Three approaches account for most of what small-scale breeders do.
- Open pollination. Allow each male reach every female. It keeps the whole diversity of the line, produces a large quantity of seed, and involves no selection at all. This is how traditional lines are maintained going, and it is the correct method when the goal is preservation rather than improvement.
- Backcross. Cross a chosen seedling back to one of its parents to lock in a specific trait. It narrows the genetics fast and is used when one plant has something worth concentrating and the second contributed mainly vigour.
- Selected cross. One chosen male on one or a few picked females, everything else removed. The seeds carry the traits of two selected plants and express less variation than the parent pack. Repeated over generations with stable selection, this is how a new line is built.
Each of these need nothing more than a separate space for the male, a paintbrush or a small bag, and patience. Not one of them needs the chemical reversal that feminized production requires.
The Seeds That Only Exist as Regulars
Some lines have never been feminized and probably never will be: landraces collected from places where cannabis grew over centuries, and old crosses from the first decades of modern breeding. They are sold as regular seed because the breeders maintaining them regard diversity as the entire point, and reversing a single plant would destroy exactly what makes the line worth the trouble of keeping.
Running a landrace from regular seed is a different experience from running a commercial hybrid. There will be wide variation, extended flowering times in tropical lines, tall plants, and traits that made sense in a mountain valley but not in a small room. There will be also aromas and effects that do not exist in the hybrid market at all. Breeder Regular Seeds keeps a dedicated landrace and heirloom section, with each line labelled with its region of origin and the generation it has been grown out since the original collection.
Who Should Not Buy Regular Seeds
Nothing of the above turns regular seed the best option for everyone, and pretending that it is does the product no favours.
A grower with room for a handful of plants who needs every one of them to finish is far better off with feminized seed. The same is a grower unable to check the plants every day around the start of flower, because a missed male in a small space ruins the whole crop within days. Someone growing a single autoflower on a balcony gets no use from a population they cannot choose from. And a buyer who is after a specific clone-only plant reproduced exactly is looking for a feminized S1, not a regular cross. Regular seed is for the grower who intends to select, to hold onto and eventually to produce something new; for anyone else the back shelf is safely ignored alone.
Before You Buy
Breeder Regular Seeds dispatches every order in unmarked parcels with the original packs sealed inside and nothing on the exterior to reveal the contents. Orders to the United States are not taken, because seed importation is not permitted there. Seed law differs sharply by country: in a good number of places buying seeds is lawful as collectables while germinating them is not, and in others both are permitted under licence or neither is. Checking the rules in your own jurisdiction is the buyer’s job, and no part of this article should be read as legal advice.
